Introducing New Rugs by Heather Chontos

Introducing New Rugs by Heather Chontos
In 2025, Swedish interior brand LAYERED collaborated with American multidisciplinary artist Heather Chontos to launch a statement-making collection of hand-knotted rugs. This partnership reimagines Chontos’ signature abstract paintings as functional textile art for the modern home.
Heather Chontos is a self-taught artist based on a horse farm in Portugal. Her work is defined by instinctive gestures and a unique language of color and form. For this collection, she drew inspiration from her surrounding landscape, the shifting light, and her past experiences living in France and the United States.
The series features three distinct rug designs, each translating a specific period of Chontos' artistic journey into 100% New Zealand wool. The Collage rug was inspired by an artwork created from torn movie posters and antique French magazine pages, capturing a sense of layering and raw materiality. The Kaleidoscope design is based on a pivotal period when Chontos began using antique linen, offering a dynamic composition of movement and contrast. Finally, Blue Lake reimagines a painting of a still lake in northern France, utilizing deep blue hues and gentle tonal shifts to create a sense of calm.
To maintain the integrity of Chontos' paintings, each rug underwent a meticulous production process. Every piece took between 5 to 10 days for multiple artisans to complete. Weavers used space, solid, and abrash dyeing techniques to replicate the depth of the original oil pigment sticks, frequently switching between 10 to 15 different yarn shades to follow the intricate patterns.
