Reflections on Danish Design House Getama

Reflections on Danish Design House Getama

A Moment of Reflection for Danish Design House Getama

One of Nørdikka Collective's most treasured brands is Danish design house Getama. This iconic furniture company boasts a long history of producing some of the highest quality, handcrafted Scandinavian furniture by the most important names in modern Danish design.

Mere days after receiving our first Getama shipment in February, we got news of a devastating fire that destroyed their entire production facility. While, thankfully, no one was hurt, the tragic fire sent shock waves through the entire Danish design community.

Many people have since inquired about Getama's MK-16 folding chair by Mogens Koch (pictured above in the Nørdikka Collective showroom), but co-founder Amy Larson refused to sell them for fear that they may be the last to ship to the United States for many years.

Thankfully, we learned last week that production has already recommenced in Getama's upholstery department and we remain hopeful that more good news will follow. We look forward to visiting Getama when we return to Denmark this spring.

This week, we wanted to reflect on the reasons why Getama and other small Danish and Scandinavian design houses are so important to us, such as their long tradition of craftsmanship, sustainability, and ethical treatment of workers. We celebrate Getama for their dedication to their core values in a broader climate of mass market production.

When you purchase a piece of furniture from Getama or our other legacy design houses, you are bringing home works of art-pieces that you will never want to let go and that you will pass down to your children, as they have in Europe for generations. You also support design philosophies that reflect a deep respect for the planet, people, and the artistry of things made by hand.

We look forward to announcing the day that the MK-16 chairs will again be available at Nørdikka alongside the entire Getama collection! We warmly invite you to stop by our Miami showroom to experience our collection of Getama pieces in person!
