The Kolho Lounge Chair

By Matthew Day Jackson

$2,795.00

Leadtime: Special Order 4–8 Weeks

Finland Finland

The Kolho Chair by Made by Choice is a sculptural, thought-provoking furniture piece that reflects the bold spirit of Finnish design and the conceptual depth of contemporary art. Designed by American artist Matthew Day Jackson, the Kolho Chair is part of a striking series of chairs and tables defined by a juxtaposition of precise right angles and fluid, serpentine curves. The Kolho collection takes its name from the small Finnish town of Kolho, as well as inspiration from the 1969 Apollo lunar landing—fusing earthly locality with celestial ambition.

Made by Choice, a Finnish design company based in southwestern Finland, collaborated with Jackson to produce the Kolho Chair as an embodiment of Nordic values: clarity, sustainability, and craftsmanship. With every Kolho Chair, Made by Choice demonstrates its deep commitment to Nordic design principles, such as the celebration of natural materials, durable construction, and a refined yet playful aesthetic. The chair’s sculptural form is available in a curated palette of Nordic colors, echoing the soft greys, deep forest greens, rich ochres, and muted blues found in Finland’s coastal landscapes and seasonal light. Every Kolho Chair is manufactured in Made by Choice’s own factory, ensuring precise quality control and the use of sustainable, regionally sourced wood.

At the core of the Kolho Chair is the unique artistic vision of Matthew Day Jackson. Born in Panorama City, California in 1974, and now based in Brooklyn, New York, Jackson is known for a wide-ranging practice that includes sculpture, painting, performance, photography, and installation. His work engages with large cultural and philosophical themes such as human evolution, the seduction of the frontier, the myth of the American Dream, and mankind’s relationship with technological progress. In Kolho, Jackson channels these themes into form. He describes the chair as a physical expression of the tension between chaos and order: the sinuous, serpentine leg representing temptation and unpredictability, supporting a clean, flat plane that symbolizes reason and stability. Between these two forces lies what Jackson calls “the space of play”—a metaphorical and physical area where imagination and humanity flourish.

When the Kolho Chair by Made by Choice was unveiled at Milan’s Salone del Mobile in 2019, it was immediately recognized as a standout design. It embodies not only the rigorous quality and innovation Made by Choice is known for, but also the layered symbolism and expressive power of Jackson’s artistic language. Each Kolho Chair is a statement piece—bold, cerebral, and beautifully constructed—bridging the worlds of Nordic design and conceptual art.

The Kolho Chair by Made by Choice is available in a variety of wood finishes and color options. Customization is encouraged, in line with the company’s ethos of collaborative and expressive creation. Please inquire directly for more information on available finishes and bespoke configurations.

"Kolho is a series of tables and chairs formed of right angles and serpentine forms. It is inspired by Apollo landing and a small town called Kolho in Finland. The serpent represents temptation and chaos which supports the flat plane of reason. The space between Reason and Chaos is that of PLAY. This is the space where our human animal truly shows its greatest self." — Matthew Day Jackson, artist (Pace Gallery)

FAQ

What is Nørdikka Collective?

Nørdikka Collective is a new design and lifestyle brand that showcases Nordic & Scandinavian furniture, lighting, décor, and lifestyle products for audiences in the Americas.

Nørdikka opened its first physical showroom in Miami, Florida in January 2024. In December 2024, we announced plans for a new, improved showroom and design studio in Spring 2025.

What is Scandinavian & Nordic Design?

People from Scandinavia and the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden—and Iceland) obsess over high-quality design, exquisite craftsmanship, and sustainability.

From mid-century modern icons to today's emerging designers, they believe beautiful design improves lives and that intentional consumption can even make us happier.

Why Makes Scandinavian Design Special?

People from Scandinavia and the Nordic countries self-report higher levels of happiness with their lives than than anywhere else on Earth. Despite cloudy, wet summers and long, cold winter nights, many there find a contentment most of us only wish for.

We are not suggesting that incorporating Scandinavian design in your home will make you happier (wink). But we do believe that making intentional choices about the objects that surround us—their beauty, longevity, and functionality—can improve our daily lives.

What "Scandinavian" philosophies & values?

Nørdikka Collective showcases classic pieces by iconic mid-century designers, alongside work by the region's emerging talent. What unites them is a timeless pursuit of design perfection: form follows function; beauty in minimalism; quality is luxury; and longevity is sustainability.

The term "Scandinavian" isn't just about our objects, but rather the philosophies and values the objects represent. Our partners revere environmental stewardship, value human-centered manufacturing, and work to preserve their cultures' design heritage for future generations.
