The Kolho Dining Chair

By Matthew Day Jackson

Leadtime: Special Order 4–8 Weeks

Finland Finland

The Kolho Dining Chair by Made by Choice is a striking fusion of Nordic minimalism and conceptual artistry. Designed by Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Matthew Day Jackson, the Kolho Dining Chair is part of a larger furniture series that includes both chairs and tables, each defined by a unique visual dialogue between precision and organic form. With its commanding silhouette, the Kolho Dining Chair embodies the spirit of Finnish design—bold, functional, sculptural, and deeply rooted in material honesty and craftsmanship.

Named after the small Finnish town of Kolho and inspired by the monumental Apollo lunar landing, the Kolho Dining Chair reflects both earthly heritage and cosmic ambition. The serpentine curve of the leg—a recurring motif in the series—represents chaos and temptation, while the chair’s sharply defined seating plane symbolizes reason and order. In Matthew Day Jackson’s vision, the Kolho Dining Chair becomes a metaphor for the human experience: the space between chaos and reason is where creativity, emotion, and play exist.

Matthew Day Jackson, born in 1974 in Panorama City, California, is internationally known for his diverse practice encompassing sculpture, painting, video, photography, installation, and performance. His work often tackles themes like the evolution of human thought, the seductive myth of the American Dream, and the uneasy relationship between technology and progress. The Kolho Dining Chair is a continuation of Jackson’s ongoing exploration of these subjects—translating his philosophical inquiries into a functional and sculptural object. His collaboration with Made by Choice marked a significant entry into the world of furniture design, with the Kolho series making its debut at Milan’s Salone del Mobile in 2019 to critical acclaim.

Made by Choice, the Finnish design house behind the Kolho Dining Chair, is known for championing the values of sustainability, bold design, and collective creativity. Headquartered in southwestern Finland, Made by Choice produces all of its pieces in-house, marrying cutting-edge manufacturing technology with time-honored woodworking traditions. Their commitment to Nordic values is evident in every Kolho Dining Chair—each one crafted from sustainably sourced Finnish wood and available in a curated selection of Nordic-inspired finishes. Think soft ash greys, icy blues, deep forest greens, and pale birch tones—all evoking the colors of the Finnish landscape and light.

The Kolho Dining Chair by Made by Choice is not just a seating object; it is a functional sculpture, a conversation piece, and a reflection of a uniquely Nordic approach to design—where art and utility coexist. It is available in a wide variety of finishes and color options, and customization is welcomed to suit residential, commercial, or hospitality spaces that value daring aesthetics and enduring quality.

Authentic Nyhavn Desk by House of Finn Juhl | Danish & Scandinavian Modern Design

"Kolho is a series of tables and chairs formed of right angles and serpentine forms. It is inspired by Apollo landing and a small town called Kolho in Finland. The serpent represents temptation and chaos which supports the flat plane of reason. The space between Reason and Chaos is that of PLAY. This is the space where our human animal truly shows its greatest self." — Matthew Day Jackson, artist (Pace Gallery)

FAQ

What is Nørdikka Collective?

Nørdikka Collective is a new design and lifestyle brand that showcases Nordic & Scandinavian furniture, lighting, décor, and lifestyle products for audiences in the Americas.

Nørdikka opened its first physical showroom in Miami, Florida in January 2024. In December 2024, we announced plans for a new, improved showroom and design studio in Spring 2025.

What is Scandinavian & Nordic Design?

People from Scandinavia and the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden—and Iceland) obsess over high-quality design, exquisite craftsmanship, and sustainability.

From mid-century modern icons to today's emerging designers, they believe beautiful design improves lives and that intentional consumption can even make us happier.

Why Makes Scandinavian Design Special?

People from Scandinavia and the Nordic countries self-report higher levels of happiness with their lives than than anywhere else on Earth. Despite cloudy, wet summers and long, cold winter nights, many there find a contentment most of us only wish for.

We are not suggesting that incorporating Scandinavian design in your home will make you happier (wink). But we do believe that making intentional choices about the objects that surround us—their beauty, longevity, and functionality—can improve our daily lives.

What "Scandinavian" philosophies & values?

Nørdikka Collective showcases classic pieces by iconic mid-century designers, alongside work by the region's emerging talent. What unites them is a timeless pursuit of design perfection: form follows function; beauty in minimalism; quality is luxury; and longevity is sustainability.

The term "Scandinavian" isn't just about our objects, but rather the philosophies and values the objects represent. Our partners revere environmental stewardship, value human-centered manufacturing, and work to preserve their cultures' design heritage for future generations.
