The Finn Juhl Pelican Chair Gotland Sheepskin

By Finn Juhl

Leadtime: Made to Order 8 to 12 weeks

Denmark Denmark

The Finn Juhl Pelican Chair in Gotland Sheepskin is a rare and exclusive edition of one of the most iconic designs in Scandinavian furniture history. Originally designed in 1940 by Danish designer Finn Juhl, the Pelican Chair defied the conventions of its time with its surreal, sculptural form and organic curves. Introduced at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, the chair made an immediate impact with its bold, animal-like silhouette. However, it was not until 2001 that the Pelican Chair was put into regular production, underscoring how far ahead of its time the design truly was.

This special edition features upholstery in natural Gotland sheepskin, sourced from the Swedish island of Gotland. The Gotland sheepskin Pelican Chair is produced only once per year due to the limited seasonal availability of this unique material. Each sheepskin is completely natural and undyed, showcasing distinctive tones ranging from silvery greys to deeper shades, often with white or black accents. No two chairs are alike, making every Gotland edition a truly one-of-a-kind collector’s piece. The soft, curly texture of the Gotland sheepskin enhances the chair’s sculptural form while offering exceptional comfort and warmth.

The Pelican Chair’s enveloping shape and low, open profile make it ideal for relaxed lounging. Its deep curves are often described as a body cradling another body, a hallmark of Finn Juhl’s human-centered approach to design. As with many of his most celebrated pieces, the Pelican Chair offers multiple comfortable seating positions and effortlessly combines artistic expression with everyday function. It is a signature example of mid-century modern Scandinavian design and a key part of the House of Finn Juhl collection.

Each Finn Juhl Pelican Chair in Gotland Sheepskin is handcrafted in Denmark using the original design drawings and methods developed by Juhl himself. The chair is available with solid wood legs in oak, walnut, or painted black finishes. The Gotland sheepskin edition may be ordered with or without buttons, and in two model variations: FJ 4000 and FJ 4001. Every chair reflects the House of Finn Juhl’s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and the legacy of Danish modern design.

The Finn Juhl Pelican Chair in Gotland Sheepskin is a functional sculpture and a rare opportunity to own a limited-edition version of a Danish design classic. Its organic lines and natural materials make it a timeless addition to both modern and traditional interiors. FAQ

What is Nørdikka Collective?

Nørdikka Collective is a new design and lifestyle brand that showcases Nordic & Scandinavian furniture, lighting, décor, and lifestyle products for audiences in the Americas.

Nørdikka opened its first physical showroom in Miami, Florida in January 2024. In December 2024, we announced plans for a new, improved showroom and design studio in Spring 2025.

What is Scandinavian & Nordic Design?

People from Scandinavia and the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden—and Iceland) obsess over high-quality design, exquisite craftsmanship, and sustainability.

From mid-century modern icons to today's emerging designers, they believe beautiful design improves lives and that intentional consumption can even make us happier.

Why Makes Scandinavian Design Special?

People from Scandinavia and the Nordic countries self-report higher levels of happiness with their lives than than anywhere else on Earth. Despite cloudy, wet summers and long, cold winter nights, many there find a contentment most of us only wish for.

We are not suggesting that incorporating Scandinavian design in your home will make you happier (wink). But we do believe that making intentional choices about the objects that surround us—their beauty, longevity, and functionality—can improve our daily lives.

What "Scandinavian" philosophies & values?

Nørdikka Collective showcases classic pieces by iconic mid-century designers, alongside work by the region's emerging talent. What unites them is a timeless pursuit of design perfection: form follows function; beauty in minimalism; quality is luxury; and longevity is sustainability.

The term "Scandinavian" isn't just about our objects, but rather the philosophies and values the objects represent. Our partners revere environmental stewardship, value human-centered manufacturing, and work to preserve their cultures' design heritage for future generations.
